Could a water softener help with eczema and dry skin conditions?
After a two year study, Scientists at the University of Sheffield have found that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema.
Minerals in hard water were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used a twin-tank water softener in their study they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions this research could be a game changer.
Eczema is a painful and distressing skin condition, which affects many children and adults in the UK. Most current treatments for eczema only suppress the condition and in the case of steroid creams can often have unwanted side-effects.
A few facts about eczema
Eczema is the name given to a group of skin conditions that can make the skin dry, hot and itchy and can cause it to become broken, raw and bleed.
Eczema affects approximately 1 in 12 adults and 1 in 5 children in the UK.
Summer temperatures can make symptoms worse for some eczema sufferers, particularly at night, leading to loss of sleep and poor concentration.
There is currently no cure for eczema, only ways of minimising the dicomfort.
Water softeners can aid eczema sufferers by helping to reduce the amount of soap and detergent required for personal and household cleaning.
Customers that have purchased a water softener for the reason of improving their families’ skin conditions have been astounded at how dramatic the results have been.
See below for some examples.
“My daughter Olivia has had eczema from birth, I have tried various creams, emolients, even emu oil, but nothing really helped long term. Until I bought a Mega Twin water softener, within 3 months Olivia’s eczema had virtually disappeared. We are so pleased with our water softener and would not live without it!!!”

“I have always suffered from eczema patches on my elbows and knees, which are painful and unsightly. A friend told me they had just had a water softener fitted by ‘water softener services’ and that I should too. I have been amazed at the results, my skin is now soft and smooth and I hardly use any emollient cream now. I wish I had had one fitted years ago.”
